Why I would do my prenatal care at Mystick Women’s Health
If I had a family member or friend who was pregnant, or if I personally needed prenatal care, I would want the care given at Mystick Women’s Health. I know this blog already sounds self-boasting, but I think the best indicator of quality of care is “would I personally want to come here” or “would I refer a family member here?” and in the two years that I have been working at MWH, the answer to that question has always been “yes”.
Here is what makes our prenatal care unique and leading edge.
1st trimester non-invasive genetic testing: Here at MWH all of our patients, regardless of age or risk factors, are offered cell-free fetal DNA testing during their initial prenatal visit (around 10 weeks). Cell-free DNA is the most advanced way to detect early fetal abnormalities through genetic material that is released by the placenta and into the maternal blood circulation. The results are very accurate, the test is non-invasive (blood draw for mom), and if you choose, you can also learn the sex of the baby by the end of the first trimester! Best yet, most insurances will cover the full cost of our genetic tests, with little to no out-of-pocket costs for you.
On site lactation counseling: Pediatrician offices often have lactation support, and it’s common to see a lactation counselor on a labor and delivery floor, but I think the best time to arm yourself with lactation knowledge is during prenatal care. This is the time when you can prepare for breastfeeding and create goals, plans, and strategies for success. At MWH we have on site lactation counseling for one-on-one sessions during prenatal care as well as a postpartum breastfeeding ward. We also teach breastfeeding classes in our office and dedicate these classes to partners and family members who play an important role in breastfeeding. Creating a relationship with a lactation counselor during your pregnancy is a helpful way to have a support person during those first few days at home when breastfeeding questions often arise.
Patient-centered care: The greatest thing about having a small practice is that we create our space for our patients rather than for our staff. With 8 staff members, not only will you learn our names, but more importantly, we will know yours. You will not be “just another patient.” Your requests and desires for your pregnancy and birth should always come first and we will strive to let you take the lead during this very special time of your life.
We are affiliated with a baby friendly hospital: Where you deliver is equally as important as where you do your prenatal care. Winchester Hospital abides to a baby friendly protocol in which all mothers and babies room in together and are encouraged to do skin to skin for bonding and lactation initiation. On the labor and delivery floor you will find a hot tub and showers available for use during contractions, which can be very helpful for pain relief. You and your family can also tour the hospital and meet the staff prior to birth. And nothing makes you feel more special when pulling up to the hospital during labor than 24/7 valet parking ;)
If you have any further questions about what prenatal care includes here at Mystick Women’s Health please always feel free to ask. It is an honor to be part of this beautiful journey of a women’s life, and we don’t take it for granted.
Yours,
